Hypothyroidism

Causes, symptoms, treatment

The hypofunction of the thyroid gland is a functional disorder that often occurs as a result of thyroiditis. Irradiation of the thyroid gland or surgery can also cause this condition. The underactive thyroid causes symptoms such as depression, listlessness and concentration problems.

Also fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, hair loss and brittle fingernails are symptoms of a hypofunction of the thyroid gland.

Freezing is also a classic symptom of hypofunction. In rare cases, heart rhythm disturbances occur. Hypothyroidism is a thyroid disorder that – unlike hyperthyroidism – does not necessarily need to be treated. However, many patients benefit from therapy.

The treatment of hypothyroidism is always carried out by menas of medication, i. e. by thyroid hormone administration.
